NIC EICThe National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting is the industry's independent, non profit-making, voluntary regulatory body covering the whole of the United Kingdom. We are not a trade association and do not represent the interests of electrical contractors. The NICEIC's sole purpose is to protect consumers from unsafe and unsound electrical work. Set up more than 45 years ago, the NICEIC maintains a Roll of Approved Contractors that are inspected every year to check that their work meets the national safety standard BS 7671 (the IEE Wiring Regulations) and other relevant technical standards. They employ more than 50 Area Engineers who make annual visits to Approved Contractors to assess their technical capability, and inspect samples of their electrical work. They have a head office staff of 50 including 14 electrical engineers, and they operate a Technical Helpline (telephone: 020 7564 2320) where contractors and specifiers can obtain practical advice and guidance. The NICEIC has wide support from the electrical industry, professional bodies and consumer groups. The National Inspection Council consists of representatives from 75 bodies including the Electricity Association, Public Electricity Distributors, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Institution of Incorporated Engineers, the Consumers' Association and many other notable organisations having an interest in electrical safety.
